Mike Swick to fight before year ends

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Mike Swick has just gone under the knife last week and yet he is hopeful that he’ll see some action before the yearend.

“I think [the elbow] is going to recover pretty well, and I should be back in November,” Swick said. “I would say November, maybe December.”

The welterweight fighter from San Jose, Calif. said the surgery was originally scheduled before his bout with Marcus Davis at UFC 85: Bedlam early June.

“I’ve been needing to get it taken care of for a while,” Swick said. “We knew we had to schedule it right after [the Davis] fight to get it done. I got a bunch of little bone fragments taken out of my elbow.”

Swick earned a victory over Davis in said event via unanimous decision.

Now, he’s confident that his bout late this year is a possibility. He dispelled the rumors however, that he is to fight with Dan Hardy at UFC 89. He said the October event is too soon for him to make a complete recovery.

“That’s a false rumor,” Swick said. “I haven’t heard anything about it. I just had surgery, and I’m not going to be back until probably November or December. I’m not fighting Dan Hardy in England. I’m not even fighting on that card. There’s no way I’ll be back that soon.”

I won the fight – Nathan Marquardt

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

From the point of view of Nathan Marquardt, he won against Thales Leites at UFC 85.

Marquardt lost via a controversial split decision; a decision that would fuel questions on MMA sport’s rulebook.

“I’ve never seen a fight like that, never have I had a point taken away for me in any other fight. I believe this was my first,” said Marquardt. “It’s disappointing. Actually he got warned three times for grabbing my glove, the fence and elbowing the back of my head.”

It was during the round two of the bout when things went to the minus side – literally.  Marquardt landed a knee to his foe’s head while Leites was still considered to be on the ground. Referee Herb Dean decided it was a foul move and deducted a point from Marquardt.

But it was in the third round when the game clearly went for Leites. Dean threw a two-point deduction against Marquardt when he delivered strikes to the back of the head.

“I’m happy with the way I performed. I know the fans loved it. Honestly, all the controversy over the point deductions and me losing a split decision, everybody who saw the fight knows that I won the fight,” Marquardt said. “In a way it’s been a blessing in disguise. It’s kind of made my popularity go up because everyone is talking about it.”

And, how about a rematch?

Marquardt wants nothing more than a conclusive contest between him and Leites. However, he’s not sure if the Brazilian fighter would be a willing participant.

“I would love a rematch and I asked for it. I doubt he’s going to give me a rematch. I think he’s kind of scared to be honest,” Marquardt said. “He got lucky and knocked me down right away and mounted me. That’s his game, to get to the mount position. What better position for him to land up in? I was able to escape, get back up to my feet and have him rocked by the end of the round. I think he knows that he was kind of outclassed.”

UFC 85 was held in London on June 7.

Bisping vs Leben on UFC 89

Friday, July 18th, 2008

ufcIt’s official – it will be Bisping vs Leben on UFC 89 in England.

The event takes place on October 18 at The National Indoor Arena in the English city of Birmingham.

The middleweight bout between England native Michael Bisping (16-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) and veteran middleweight Chris Leben (18-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC) was announced July 1.

A previous bout has been arranged between the two fighters for UFC 85 in London. Leben, however, was pulled off the June 7 event because he had to serve jail time. Leben violated his probation stemming from an earlier DUI arrest.

Jason Day replaced Leben in that event and suffered a defeat when he was knocked out on the first round by Bisping.

Leben emerged as a middleweight contender when he recently defeated Terry Martin and Alessio Sakara. Prior to these back-to-back victories, he suffered three losses out of his four fights.

UFC 89 tickets go on sale starting July 6 (Saturday). Members of UFC’s fan club can avail of tickets earlier beginning on Wednesday.

UFC to deliver ring action on July 19

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

wanderlei_silvaMixed martial arts fans are likely to be served non-stop action on the octagon come July 19. It looks like UFC is currently passed the brainstorming stage with the fight plan underway for that Saturday night. The event will be televised on Spike TV.

Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva and Brandon “The Truth” Vera are being considered to face each other in a light heavyweight main event.

The tentatively scheduled fight could be Vera’s rebound shot from his recent loss against Brazilian fighter Fabricio Werdum. Vera lost through a controversial stoppage at UFC 85 “Bedlam” in London.

Silva, meanwhile, is still fresh from his recent victory against Keith Jardine. The former Pride champion defeated Jardine at UFC 84 “Ill Will” in Las Vegas last April in an impressive 36-second knockout.

Nobody loves a loser - Brandon Vera

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

brandon-veraNobody loves a loser. This was what’s on Brandon ‘The Truth’ Vera’s mind as he questioned the referee’s decision to stop his fight against Fabricio Werdum. The stoppage took place with 20 seconds left in round one at UFC 85.

Vera did not mince words with his feelings towards ref Dan Miragliotta during the UFC 85 post-fight press conference. “That ref sucks,” Vera heatedly stated. “I don’t agree with that stoppage, and I’m pissed. I had to walk away from the ref.”

“The referee was asking me, talking to me, saying something like, ‘are you okay?’ He was talking to me. I remember he was talking to me and I was saying, ‘I’m okay. I’m okay. I’m okay.’ I said it three times. I made sure I stressed, ‘I’m.’ My last fight I fought with a broken hand after the first thirty seconds, all three rounds, no complaints. I was getting punched in the face man. Come on,” Vera continued.

During the said press conference, Werdum commented on Vera’s call for a rematch. According to Werdum, Vera must work his way back up through the ranks before getting a rematch. As expected, this comment has raised the ire of Vera some more.

“I’m kind of disappointed in Fabricio,” said the California-based fighter. “He said yes earlier in the cage, right after. At least that’s what I thought. He shook his head, yea, we can do it again. Now he’s telling me to get back in line. I understand why he doesn’t want to fight me again.”

UFC 85: Play by Play

Matt-Hughes-Thiago-Alves

Matt Hughes Vs. Thiago Alves

Our earlier predictions on Huges vs. Alves were completely off, we used a bit of personal emotion to target the outcome of the fight.  We have seen Matt Hughes at his best, but he’s way past that.  Hughes is past his prime and should quit now.

Round 1:

Thiago Alves stuffs a few takedowns from Hughes and Hughes pulls guard.  After missing an armbar from the bottom, Hughes eats a hard left hand, then Alves stands up and delivers a knee.  Matt Hughes finally gets a takedown and ends up on top, but has problems controlling Alves.  After some elbows from side control and a butter fly guard from Alves, Alves is back on his feet but is pulled into Hughes’ guard again.

Rounds 1 score: 10-9 (Alves)

Round 2:

Hughes gets pounded with a hard knee at the start of the round.  Matt Hughes right eye is CUT badly, and Alves explodes into another flying knee that dazes the falling Hughes.  Alves jumps on Hughes like a lion with non stop punching.  The fight is stopped at 1:02.

Thiago Alves Wins by Technical Knock Out at 1:02 in the 2nd round

Fabricio-Werdum-Brandon-Vera

Fabricio Werdum Vs. Brandon Vera

Round 1:

Vera starts the fight with a strong low kick, then the fight is pushed against the cage where Werdum lands a strong right as they  move into the middle of the octagon.  Werdum gets a takedown and gets into Vera’s half guard.  Vera gets back up to his feet.  Vera hits Werdum with a strong right hand that rocks him.  Fabricio Werdum trips Vera and takes a strong mount.  Werdum unloads with non stop strikes.  Vera doesn’t fight back, just covers up, the fight is stopped at 4:40 by the referee.  Everyone believes the stoppage is very questionable.

Fabricio Werdum Wins by Technical Knock Out at 4:40 in the 1st round

Michael-Bisping-Jason-Day

Michael Bisping Vs. Jason Day

Round 1:

After a few misses in the start of the round, Day lands a good straight right hand.  Bisping responds by going into a clinch and taking down Day.  Bisping unleashes lefts and rights from the top (ground and pound) but Day is resilient and stays with the fight, Bisping moves to side control.  Day gets to his feet ready to slug, but Bisping takes him down via a double leg takedown.  Bisping is on top and unleashes NON stop punches, Day doesn’t respond and the fight is stopped at 3:42 in the 1st round.

Michael Bisping Wins by Technical Knock Out at 3:42 in the 1st round

Matt Hughes vs. Thiago Alves weigh in

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

matt-huges-Thiago-AlvesThiago Alves has proved to everyone that he’s going to stay a C level fighter forever.  During the weigh in for his fight against Matt Matt Hughes, at UFC 85, he didn’t make weight.  That’s right, Thiago Alves weighed in at 174lbs., 4 lbs. over his 170lbs. weight class.  IS he even trying to become a real respected fighter? or is he another joke.  He’s obviously a joke if he can’t even make a 4lbs. cut  to fight a main even.  What a loser and joker!

Expect a strong submission or TKO by Matt Hughes.  We’d love to see Thiago Alves taught a lesson for showing little respect to the fans.
