Phil Baroni knocks out Scott Jansen

phil-baroni“New York Badass” Phil Baroni was able to rise from the dust on Saturday night when he defeated Scott Jansen at the Cage Rage 27 “Step Up” inside the Wembley Arena. It was Baroni’s first fight as a welterweight – prior to this bout he’d been in the 185-pound class.

His victory over Jansen greatly improved his record, which has tallied three times on the loss column before his win as a welterweight.

“It took a lot of courage to get in here,” Baroni said. “I had a lot of doubts going in here, but I erased them with that right hand. I feel really lucky to have this opportunity.”

Baroni overwhelmed his foe from the start, but it was his brutal right hand on his foe’s chin was what delivered his win. Jansen was knocked down, dropping heavily on the mat on the first round.

And now that he had spilled blood on that weight division, Baroni is itching for his next fight.

“Who’s next?” asked Baroni. “Who’s the next best guy? I want to meet him. I’ve fought the best in the world, up a weight, now I’m at my natural weight, I’m where I should be. I’m starting from the bottom and I’m going to prove that I’ve still got what it takes.”

However, his reputation as ‘New York Badass’ may have suffered a little. Baroni avoided an in-ring altercation. A friend of Jansen had made his way into the cage with the Brit’s cornermen who felt he had to vindicate his fallen friend. Baroni was able to fend off a headbutt and refused to respond in kind. Baroni let it go, avoiding an escalation of the encounter.
